Amen.. Guns are perfectly safe as long as you handle them safely, just like motor vehicles. A huge majority of cases where a law-abiding citizen gets killed with a gun are Darwin at work. There's still tens of thousands of cases where innocent lives are saved with guns for every one of these brain farts.

Yes, it's not the gun per se, but who has it and what they do with it....kinda like motorcycles.

Personally, I think those that have firearms should be trained.

I am all for the Swiss model with compulsory military training, as military training not only trains one for firearm use, but also for team work and carrying out orders.

If concealed carry was allowed here, and if I knew that everyone around me that is carrying a gun has a military background, then it would be easy to quickly organize a plan of attack if shit went down.

I'm an ex-infantry soldier, and while my skill-set is rusty as I am nearly 20 years out, my firearm skills are still mostly in check, and my leadership skills definitely are as I work as a supervisor.

When I go hunting with my brother-in-law, who is also ex-military, it is a pleasure compared to hunting with non-ex-military hunters. We set out a plan, map where we will be, plan which directions are safe to shoot in, are disciplined and make great efforts to be silent. Some crappy hunters I have gone out with think of none of this... they stomp through the bush waking everything up, smoking cigarettes, talking loudly, and only somewhat consider what is behind their target before shooting -- that is why most of Southern Ontario is shotgun only for deer, as then the range is barely beyond their target.

Also, you gotta be careful as most of the media landscape consists of libtard rags. Bloomberg is a media mogul and this year he donated $50,000,000 on anti-gun propaganda. For every dollar that the NRA spends on PR, the anti-gun lobbies spend seven dollars. That should tell you something about the slant of the media on this topic. Fortunately, in this day and age of the Internet, the truth gets out anyway.

Responsible adults should be treated as responsible adults and the society should respect the basic human right to self-defense. There are tens of millions of people with carry permits south of the border and their homicide rate is in the same ballpark (usually lower) as countries with similar socioeconomic factors that have really tight gun laws. That's why the homicide rate list is topped by countries with pretty restrictive gun laws (overreacting to a condition caused by socioeconomic factors) and the countries with most guns per capita will be near the bottom of the homicide rate list (bigger middle class, regular people able to afford guns).

I personally would't wanna walk around with 2lbs strapped to my hip all day every day. For others, like a friend who's a bar owner and got mugged making deposits several times, having a carry permit would make sense.
