Responsible gun owners do multiple layers of safety. The safety selector is just one of them. Even if it fails, as long as the trigger finger is outside the trigger guard unless engaging targets, the trigger won't go off. Even if it goes off due to a trigger malfunction or the shooter tripping, it won't hit anything as long as the gun is always pointed in a safe direction. There's a reason why the retail cost for $5,000,000 of insurance coverage for firearms-related damage/injury is in the $35 ballpark and wholesale cost is about $15.

So if they were carrying, think they would go up against nut cases with AKs and rocket launchers?

What's it say?

I see two problems with that:

1) You're too old to go to school
2) It's not the 70's when kids could go to school with a rifle slung without raising any eyebrows
