You just said it yourself, a gun is designed to move a projectile at a high rate of velocity -- there is nothing about kill in that definition, as what the projectile is pointed at is up to the operator.
Is a potato cannon designed to kill? It is also designed to move a projectile at a high rate of speed. How about a pellet gun? How about a slingshot? All of these things have one purpose -- to accelerate a projectile.
So is a gun's purpose dependent on what the ammo was designed for? Shotguns have target rounds available, are they designed to kill or is it more likely they were designed to destroy clays? I can easily order 9mm blanks off of tradeex, are they designed to kill?

Yetti, do you realize that most of the firearms industry is geared toward the sporting user? For every gun bought for possible use against humans (military, police, self-defensive), there are 4 guns bought for sporting purposes (hunting, competition, target practice). Even elitist companies that hate us regular peons like H&K are beginning to take notice and cater more to the sporting market.

Yetti says you gotta try alot harder than that.

You guys can make any case you like, but the simple fact is that Guns were made to kill. Look Up GUN. see the History of the Gun. What the Use of the gun was for.. The Description of the gun itself says its a weapon. LOL

Yetti says this is fine and dandy but is completely irrelevant.
Yetti is all for guns, remember ?
you want to buy a handgun and shoot for sport ? fine, provided you follow our laws.

This is just becoming a silly semantics argument now.
Guns may have been originally invented in order to kill in warfare (similar to crossbows, knives, and axes), but have since been utilized elsewhere and are now designed for many other purposes than to kill.
And the definition I use has nothing to do with kill or weaponry:
From Merriam-Webster: Gun: a : a piece of ordnance usually with high muzzle velocity and comparatively flat trajectory b : a portable firearm (as a rifle or handgun) c : a device that throws a projectile

IMO...a gun is a weapon. Made to kill. Would I want a C+C? Sure, if I was in a situation that I might need it. Thankfully I'm not and hope not to be. I like guns and they are tools. Very dangerous tools, but tools just the same. Same reason I wouldn't give a razor sharp sword to my kid...or myself.

Alright, I guess I got sucked back in.
A gun is not a weapon until it is used as one.
Weapon definition: any instrument or device for use in attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war, as a sword, rifle, or cannon. (dictionary.reference.com)
Since, in Canada, possessing a gun for the purpose of defense is not a valid reason for ownership, therefore my guns are not weapons as they are not used for defense or attack.
Now, if concealed carry was legal, then obviously the purpose would be for defense, so yes, those would be weapons.
To answer the question how can a gun be used to prevent death? It is called intimidation.
Say a guy pulls a knife on you. You draw your gun. He turns tail and runs. Did the gun solve a problem: yes. Was anyone injured or killed: no. Hence, a gun can be used to prevent death and did not cause death.
Now I am done.

Why is it that security guards transporting money are allowed to carry a firearm but the average citizen is not allowed to defend themselves at home?
Is the bank's money more valuable than the average person's life in canada?
We all know the answers to the above but just thinking out loud...

Please stop this insanity and admit that a gun is a weapon
admit it and move on to another statement.. its ok, Its not the end of the world that a Gun is a weapon.
on to the other point. You want a gun, so that you can be ready if someone pulls a knife on you ?
What if by chance they are better than you, and kill you, now theres another illegal gun on the street....lol
btw, still waiting for the Kirpan answers, and if you'd let your 3yr play with a loaded gun with a safety on. ( cuz they arent dangerous )
Please make a strong point as to why you should be allowed to carry a concealed handgun. tell me why its a good idea
Who cares what anything was designed to do, or could do. The only thing that matters is how it's used.
I guess the irony is lost on those anti-gunners that even if they are only designed for one purpose (and yet used for many others), cars for example were not designed to kill and yet they kill many more in our fine country than guns do. Designed for doesn't matter, results do.
But of course if one is a closet Liberal anti, just yell louder and louder that guns are bad bad bad!!!

Several good reasons were given why you should be able to carry concealed but your stubborn ass refuses to accept them. You jst keep yelling out your opinion without acknowledging or answering anything anyone says. Makes yetti seem retarded or atleast a little slow.

yetti is not anti gun. lets get that out there right off the bat.
what does liberal have to do with anything, yetti isnt liberal, conservative, ndp or whatever.
what we are talking about now, seems to be the need for people to carry around handguns ( Legally ) like the states. right ?
well, Yetti doesnt want that.
Would you be happy knowing that Yetti could legally get a Handgun and walk around walmart with it ? NO! lol
look at how people already expose the system for its flaws, can you imagine what would happen if handguns were made available to the public ? Yetti has no problem with the way things are run now in this country ( in regards to gun control )
conceal and carry just puts more handguns on the street. ( which it does, cause more people would be armed ) not everyone has the attitude of YOU or speedfreak, or Chuck, maybe one day they freak out on some idiot and blast away.
Anyone know what prompted gun laws in the States from when it was the wild west and almost every one carried, to needing a lic. to do so?
I have to agree that we are at a goodish balance right now as far as gun control in Canada.
I'll give in to the definition of "weapon" as anything used as such then becomes one and not until it's used. i.e. a bat is not until it is used to assault someone.
