What I don't get is, we can't power a few A/C's in summer let alone a few million cars plug into the grid at 5:30 pm... coupled by everyone making dinner at that time. Makes zero sense.

I'm not a computer programmer, so I'm no expert. But from my limited mechanical experience, I don't think you can fix battery issues with software or fix that freezing door issue. Were you being sarcastic???
Lithium ion batteries do not perform well in the cold, they lose their capacity. That's why I haven't switched to lithium ion on my bike. I tour a bit & ride thru november. I don't think it will be in my favour.
Because the door handle is recessed into the body of the car, it is hard to access when a sheet of ice is covering it. I believe there is a spring mechanism that pops the door handle out when your press it. With an ice sheet covering it, they spring cannot pop the handle outwards.

Mostly not being sarcastic. The article mentioned a software update to fix it. I couldn't think of software fixing a battery issue. Unless it's to stop battery drain when not on. The handle fix was posted by a user. Give it a good whack, break the ice and hit the handle "firmly".....it's a car, not crystal.

I am actually curious how a software update can fix a physical property of a battery. I think it has to do with the chemistry of the battery. Because it is cold, the chemical reaction is not happening as it is supposed to be. My solution would be a battery warmer or engine block warmer on the batteries. But then again that defeats the purpose of being environmentally friendly. Putting a battery warmer all night to keep the batteries toasty. The whole purpose of those vehicles is to reduce emissions.
Stole this comment from another guy. He said he used to have a car that had one of those flip up lights in the late 90s. The lights of those cars would be frozen solid at night & he wont be able to use his lights. He would take his time to scrape the ice off, but after a few years there were huge scratches on the paint around the lights.
