Anyone have any experience doing this? I know most will say just get a new one but it's a $1000+ arai And it's not that bad on the outside, just smells like shit on the inside...
What kind of smoke damage? Was it in a house fire? or were you lighting up Rothmans with the visor down?
Everything is removable on the Arai's, at least it is on my Corsairs. And was on my old X11.
As for the vents and such, that's where some patience, qtips and isopropyl alcohol come in.
Ya house fire, wish it was Rothmans lol
I took the liner out and washed it already. Cleaned the rest with warm water and a bit of soap. Can't get into the vents however, and it still smells a bit funky...

well, there's another thing you can try, you have nothing to lose really.
remove everything from the helmet that you can, liner, pads, breath guard, vents if possible, etc.
Get a small tub, fill it with a basic shampoo (like baby shampoo for example, you don't want that 2in1 shit), add water.
Rinse your entire helmet gently to remove and loose gunk in or out, then submerge/wash your entire helmet in the shampoo tub you've set up. scrub gently and get that shampoo goodness in all the nooks and crannies. Rinse.
gently wipe dry the exterior so it doesn't leave spots, and then rest the helmet on a drying rack to let fully dry. If that doesn't at least improve the smell of the helmet, then I'm not sure what more can be done. I did this with my shoei and HJC a few years ago and it worked well. gets all the dead bugs out of the vents too.
I recommend doing a baking soda rinse (basically baking soda dissolved in water), letting it dry, washing it off and then doing a vinegar rinse.. Yeah, vinegar smells like crap, but it also deodorizes quite well.

This is exactly what the nice folks at Arai told me to do...took them long enough to respond but hey atleast they did
Washed all the removable liner so far, gonna give the shell a bath soon...

This is why you don't go home with strippers. They fall asleep on the couch with a cigarette, and you spend the next 2 months of your life scrubbing things in your life to remove the smoke/smell/rash.
