We're just about to start the process of getting rid of our home phone... which is a VOIP from CIKtel for $10/month (which is already very cheap, admittingly).
What we are thinking about doing is using the Hangouts dialer for outgoing calls, and I've also used google voice with headphones and both are usually very clear.
For incoming calls -- which are 95% of time just junk anyway and we don't answer them -- we are planing on leaving an old cellphone (a bullet proof nokia with 7 day battery life) on with a 7-11 Speakout SIM... 7-11 Speakout is $0.25/minute, and a $25 top up doesn't expire for a year.
