When it comes to oil, filter and other fluids, Do you get the good stuff like synthetic or cheapest u can get your hands on. I always go top of the line but hear all the time that im just wasting my $.
I use the semi synthetic motul personally. OEM filter. I research things thoroughly before just buying them That said I'm going to install a bmc air filter instead of k&n as I know a couple of people who after 30 years of riding had nothing good to say about the k&n.

The frame of the K&N is made of an epoxy I think, but it flexes for sure when heat up. It bends then allow unfiltered air through

Pay now or pay later. I always try and get the best for what fits the budget. With any vehicles I have I never try and cheap out on parts, especially on the bike. Where I make up the difference is I do as much of the labour myself.

I had a K&N & replaced it with bmc. I can vouch that the frame is a better plastic

I usually go for the good stuff, however i'm starting to have my doubts.
I always put oem filters and good oil in my cars and bikes, my father on the other hand puts the cheapest canadian tire crap he could find. Meanwhile his last two vehicles outlasted mine...maybe he's onto something.

I've used Crappy tire or lower cost stuff for years. Bikes have always done well and car engine have lasted longer than the body. Just change as required.

If we're talking about oil, I am cheap but use good stuff (I think).
I use Pennzoil full synthetic diesel oil, and I buy jugs of it in USA for $21 a jug.
I've read some opinions that diesel oil shouldn't be used in a bike, but the js numbers state it is suitable, so I use it.
I do change the oil filter with an oem one every oil change even though the manual claims I don't need to, I just want to get as much junk out as possible.
For rad fluid or brake fluid, I just use any brand that is within spec.

An oil filter, filters better as it becomes clogged. As long as it doesn't clog enough to open the by-pass valve

What about the 100ml (very rough estimate) or so of old oil that is in the old filter and can only come out with a filter change?
I hate having dirty old oil contaminating the new stuff as soon as I put it in... I like that window to be a golden hue for as long as possible.
And I should probably edit my post above... I don't use Pennzoil in the bike, that is what I use in the car.... I use Rotella T6 in the bikes. Not sure what I was thinking when I typed that out.

I agree with you, but that's just in the chamber just before it gets filtered. Also the color of oil is not an adequate indication of condition of oil. It's just unburnt carbon

When I was a broke-ass student, I kept my bikes running on the cheapest stuff possible. Now that I can afford it, I still use the cheapest stuff possible. The reason is that I've never seen an oil-related failure in any vehicle that had recommended oil changes, and "premium fluids" market is just so full of utter BS.
These bikes are designed by smart guys, and designed around what they spec to use. I'm not second guessing a PhD engineer in Hamamatsu.
I think a lot of what drives people to buy expensive consumables is that they are still relatively cheap and they can feel like it makes a difference for not much money.
If it comes from the same company, the more expensive stuff isn't necessarily better than the cheap stuff. For example in the days of film... Film was made in wide sheets and cut into strip/rolls. The stuff in the center was cut and sold as the pro grade and the stuff as it got toward the edges were sold as the high end and then down to the consumer low end. All in all minor differences. Goes for all sorts of stuff.
I'm to lazy to search to see if there are others, but it's about time we had an oil thread in here.......
Lolz, you can't escape it Mike. Don't wish for a second

I used to work at the Molson Brewery in Etobicoke when it was Fosters and Carling. We would put the same swill from the same tank in 9 different branded bottles that varied in retail price 300% in the US market. Very little went into actually making the beer, we would control for one bland taste that tested well and then marketing would do the rest. People would swear there was a difference.

That's exactly what it is (sometimes): people FEEL like they're making a better choice. Remember the $100 6ft HDMI cables Monster was selling? Sometimes you get what you pay for, other times things are more expensive so people will think they're better.
The trick is knowing when it's worth spending more, and when it doesn't make a difference. It's a never ending learning process. When someone doesn't feel like doing the work, they can always just be safe and shell out extra cash. 'If it's the most expensive, it must be the best!' That way they can also talk down to everyone who didn't spend as much about how they love their stuff more, and take better care of their things.
