When I grow up, I want to be like KLR Guy. That's the goal.
Thanks man - good luck.
I busted my ass in the start-up phase and got promoted like mad. 7 years in we were bought by a U.S. company. I much preferred the early company energy vs the big corporate cover your ass mentality. I was looking to get out anyways when they suggested they'd prefer to hire me as a consultant so I took my stock options and their exit package.
One year later they outsourced all the work I did to India so had some very lean years. Had a good network so rebuilt and succeeding.
It's not easy but I don't intend to ever work for someone else again.
I'm really curious, how do people move from construction to corporate?
Btw I'm a machinist
Go to school,Network, do jobs on nights/weekends/winters to get some experience or a leg in somewhere. Just keep trying until something sticks.
I bet you didn't become a machinist by rolling out of bed one day.
Oh I see.
About the machinist part, you are correct. I'm slowly nudging myself into it. I have a university degree, which I think was a complete waste of time

It's always easiest to say it wasn't worth it when you have it in your back pocket for the rest of your life.
I learned more in between classes and meeting people than most classes.
You opened my eyes a bit. Thumbs up!

having a degree is always worth it, even if you never ever work on your field.
I have never used mine but I wouldn't have the job I have right now if i wasn't able to tick that box for university degree.
I'm not even sure if this applies today. When I lost my job in '08 I couldn't find a job & not once has someone talked about my degree. I applied to hundreds of jobs.

On those Hundreds of applications that you filled, did you have to put in your education? if you did and I am sure you had to, it weights when someone is making the decision on who to call back for an interview, not saying it always does, but in most cases yes.
Don't get me wrong, i think many kids that are well educated these days wouldn't survive half the crap we had to but the more tools you have available to you the easier you find a job, a degree is just one more tool.... like you!
