I think it's more human psychology. Some people are professional victims, always looking for some cause they hang their personal grievances on. I've seen lots of ignorance from BOTH genders on the subway but overwhelmingly I've seen more men accommodate others than women.
Now, if the train is crowded, my legs go back together. If it's empty, I'll spread'em. If the only unoccupied seat is next to a guy with legs spread, I'll say "excuse me, I'd like to take this seat"... It's not that complicated. Unfortunately, we inherited from the British this compulsion to try to dictate every aspect of human behaviour. We're not as bad as they are, but their influence still shows when people push for this sort of crap.

I don't have a problem with campaigning for decent behaviour; from what I see daily, a lot of people could use a little education in that department. It's not about dictating anything, it's about educating people on how to behave in shared public space. What I do take issue with is targeting men for the alleged leg spreading thing. Bags on empty seats, feet up on seats, etc. are a far bigger issue. I take the subway from Finch every morning, at 6:00am. There's a young woman who gets on, absolutely loathsome creature. Has her iPod cranked to full volume so we can all enjoy the tinny crap bleeding through, puts her feet on the seats, her knapsack on another. The train isn't crowded at that hour but that's no excuse.
I used to use the subway a lot to commute to and from work and I would always offer my seat to someone older, disabled or pregnant. I guess it's just the way I was brought up. That being said the amount of rude and inconsiderate people on public transportation and everywhere in genreal has really increased and it is absolutely disgusting. Parents really need to step up their game in what they teach their kids.
I was on the subway with my son a few weeks ago and an elderly couple came on I got up and offered my seat to the lady. I stood infront of the seat my son was sitting in and my son, who is 4, looked over at her husband got up and gestured for him to take his seat. I was caught off guard and so unbelievably proud of him!
Parents need to teach their children about respect and decency. It is as simple as showing them by doing it and the kids will follow suit so they dont grow up to act like this.

Good for you! Every polite, decent person was brought up by people who instilled some values in them.
